How can an optimised glass façade improve both the indoor climate and energy efficiency?

Large glass façades have become a natural feature of modern construction. They create bright, open and attractive buildings, but can also present challenges such as overheating, glare and higher energy consumption.

For many businesses and building owners, the solution does not necessarily involve replacing the glass or altering the façade. Existing buildings can often be optimised through integrated façade solutions, with solar film being one of the most effective and cost-efficient methods.

The challenge posed by large glass façades

Large glass areas provide good natural light, but at the same time allow a significant amount of the sun’s heat to enter the building. This can lead to:

  • Overheating
  • Glare at workstations
  • Increased strain on air-conditioning systems
  • Higher energy consumption
  • Uneven temperatures and reduced comfort

Even in Denmark, many commercial buildings face these challenges, particularly on south- and west-facing façades, where solar radiation can be significant during the summer months.

How does solar film work?

Solar film is a technical film that is applied directly to existing glass and improves the glass’s optical and thermal properties without significantly altering the building’s architectural appearance.

Depending on the type of film, the solution can:

  • Reduce solar gain
  • Reduce glare
  • Block UV radiation
  • Protect furnishings from fading
  • Improve the thermal and visual indoor environment

The technology works by reflecting and filtering parts of the sun’s spectrum, particularly infrared radiation, which is responsible for the majority of the heat load.

Proven effectiveness

Modern solar films can deliver significant improvements to a building’s performance.

Typically, the solution can:

  • Reject up to approximately 80 per cent of total solar energy*
  • Reduce more than 75–80 per cent of infrared radiation*
  • Reduce glare whilst maintaining a high level of natural daylight

An important technical indicator is the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC). The lower the SHGC value, the less heat penetrates through the glass. Professionally selected solar films can significantly reduce the SHGC and thus improve the building’s overall energy efficiency.

*Depends on the type of glass, the type of film and the building’s orientation.

More than just energy savings

Reducing the heat load does more than just improve energy consumption.

An optimised glass façade can also contribute to:

  • A more stable indoor climate
  • Reduced strain on HVAC systems
  • Increased comfort for staff and visitors
  • Better working conditions with less glare
  • Protection against UV radiation and the fading of furnishings

A cost-effective upgrade

Compared with replacing glazing or undertaking major façade projects, solar film is a quick and cost-effective solution.

Installation can typically be carried out with minimal disruption to day-to-day operations, whilst preserving the building’s existing façade.

That is why many businesses, public institutions and industrial buildings are choosing to optimise their glass façades as a first step towards improved comfort and lower running costs.

Integrated façade solutions deliver the greatest value

At Optinor, we view solar film as one part of a comprehensive façade solution.

Depending on the building’s requirements, solar film can be combined with, amongst other things, security film, Hammerglass, curtains or other solutions which, together, improve safety, comfort, energy efficiency and the indoor climate.

By viewing the façade as a whole, it becomes possible to create solutions that not only reduce heat but also support the building’s function, architecture and the people who use it every day.

Conclusion

An optimised glass façade is about more than just reducing the temperature.

It is about creating buildings that function better, with lower energy consumption, greater comfort and a healthier indoor environment.

Professionally fitted solar film is often one of the most effective ways to achieve this and can be the first step towards a more energy-efficient and well-functioning building.
